Adèle Samphire

Member Since:

Adèle has been working in clay in various ways for more than thirty years. Her earlier work consisted mostly of handbuilt pots and relief sculptures.

The latter appeared as kitchen tiles, decorative panels, front doors, fireplace facades and murals as large as 12 x 24 feet. The sculptures were used to decorate hotels, apartment foyers, private homes and yachts.

For the last ten years Adèle has concentrated on functional ware made from porcelain or high fired stoneware clay. Most of her work is formed on the wheel. Decoration is usually applied by brush or sponge.

She works directly onto the base glaze with stains or other glazes trying to achieve a rich surface. Her earlier training in textile design seems to effect the look of her pottery.

Flowers, vegetation and the ocean strongly influence her decoration.
