ABOUT

Britchie is a designer and master craftsman. Originally from the UK, Britchie has an extensive arts background including a Degree in Industrial Design and a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art in London. His professional career spans a number of creative disciplines, starting out as a model maker for the late Sir Terence Conran’s Habitat/Heals/Mothercare empire and working for several top London agencies before transitioning to digital design with a role in software design for IBM. On immigrating to Canada, Britchie worked as a graphic artist for local movie and TV show productions moving into web design and marketing with the advent of the internet. It was during this time he rekindled his passion for working with wood, converting a small shed into a fully equipped workshop which he has continued to build through ongoing sales and private commissions.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Britchie’s work is characteristically bold and contemporary in style. His focus is on exploring new forms and visual vocabularies and is inspired by the geometry underlying nature and the cosmos. His influences are diverse—from the mathematics of ‘Girih’ tessellations to the Op art of Bridget Riley, Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis movement and numerous contemporary architects, furniture and interior designers.
