“Metalphors”
Greg Kawcyznski
Opening Thursday, September 1, 2005 6-8pm
For me, as a sculptor who is used to moving and transforming big amounts of raw materials such as clay, gypsum, wood, stone and bronze, working on sterling jewellery and miniature sculpture is a challenge, because smaller forms are ruled by the same principals of composition.
My rings, chains, earrings and bracelets are large in size because they are sculptural. They could adorn a medieval queen or a king. There is an almost musical effect to my chains when they are being handled.
Recently I have been working on a series of bird sculptures. Birds inspire me with their shape, pattern of feathers, vocal expressiveness and comical behaviour.
I am going to exhibit of my hand-made tools because they are also sculptural and have their own mysterious energy. When making them, I feel the same inspiration and emotional involvement as if I were making a piece of art.
