“Shaped Notes”

Katherine Soucie

Shaped Notes is a new body of work by artist/designer Katherine Soucie that is inspired by music, technology and fashion. This new series explores traditional and contemporary printing methods through the inspiration of music and fashion. Soucie integrates many surface design techniques such as embroidery, stitching, natural dyeing, and deconstructed printing in conjunction with digital printing processes.

New blended fibres such as cotton/seacell and crayon knits, hemp/cotton, silks along with other natural fibres are incorporated into this body of work. Imagery created for this series was developed on Photoshop and Illustrator and printed directly onto fabric using small and large format printers. The small format printer used for developing this work was a Canon i860 while all the large format printing created was developed on an Encad 3000 while at the Kansas City Art Institute in June 2005. Soucie's musical inspiration for this work was Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley and Johnny Cash. 2D and 3D functional work will be exhibited.
