Arabesque Pottery

In 1996, I created Arabesque Pottery, a studio line of functional and non-functional forms that complement my larger one-of-a-kind pieces. The work is wheel thrown or slab built then hand carved by me at a wet clay stage and called "leatherhard." I am using the name "Arabesque" for the visual reference to an architectural detail know as an arabesque, or in layman's terms, a "curlique"; which you find in a lot of my work. The arabesque suggests the beauty and continuity of life.

We create original stoneware home and garden décor, which includes lanterns, birdbaths and large vessels. Each piece is a unique reflection of our intent to bring beauty and harmony into the home and garden. Our stoneware pottery décor is designed for both indoor and outdoor use.

 


 

Gordon Hutchens

Gordon Hutchens produces a variety of work from sculptured to functional, and utilizes an extremely broad range of techniques. Gordon formulates and blends all his own clay bodies using many different clays from across North America, and bases his porcelain body on a high quality kaolin from England. Clay from his own property is high in iron and is used in earthenware bodies and in oil spot glazes and metallic luster glazes. Seaweed from the beach is used in salt/sagger firings. Local wood ash is another major glaze ingredient.

Each piece is a complexity of nature, science and art. It amazes me. There are an infinite number of creative possibilities. There are an endless number of decisions that are made to get from the organic materials to the finished piece of art. And, despite my best efforts to control the variables that come together to form my art, there will always be a lack of complete control and a sense of uncertainty. But this makes the process mystical - sometimes joyful and sometimes sinister.

The expressiveness and inherent assymmetry of hand building are a constant delight for me. I admire form, value function and strive towards creating pieces that contribute to the two. I work with natural colour and texture of the clay, allowing the additional freehand shaving to accentuate and frame the form of each piece.
