STORIES OF LOVE AND PASSION
Works by Cristina Alvarez Magliano
Fifteen paintings with wood by Argentinean born, Nanaimo based artist Cristina Alvarez Magliano will be on view at the Circle Craft Gallery from March 2 through April 3. Alvarez Magliano is a highly regarded artist today working with the exclusive technique of marquetry in a figurative, yet free style.
If not limited to the body form exclusively, the human female is the central motif in virtually the entire body of work. The figures are often represented in intense colors, surrounded by imagery related to stories of love, passion and lust. The artist has developed distinctive, personal compositions of those famous stories by just implying some of their crucial elements. By combining both – an elaborated technique and unique subjects – she gets a new and bold aesthetic through her pieces.
Recently Sharma Howard, the Art Editor from The Mystic Times of Connecticut, wrote that ‘the meticulous work of Cristina Alvarez Magliano is of striking beauty…she works in wood, piecing the compositions together with marquetry…"
The artist describes her inner process of work:
"I’ve always been very fond of innovation. Although I respect tradition and I keep using materials and the ancient techniques of marquetry, I make things my way. My source of inspiration is life and nature, because they are more dramatic and aesthetically bolder than any of us. I search for equilibrium between shapes and colors, drama and tenderness; I’m not bonded to any particular art trend".
Born and raised in Argentina, Cristina Alvarez Magliano has exhibited her work in solo or group shows in Buenos Aires and Moreno, Argentina; Caunnes-Minervois, France; Pearl River, NY, San Francisco, CA, Minneapolis, MINN, Vancouver, WA, Mystic, Connecticut, in the USA; Nanaimo, BC in Canada, and on line in many specialized sites, including her own: www.allmarquetry.com. Her pieces are collected in Argentina, USA and Canada.
The artist will be in attendance for the Opening Reception and also at the Gallery on the 11th and 19th of March.
