RARA AVIS (L. = rare bird)
Gillian McMillan
Opening Thursday, May 3, 2007 from 6 - 8pm
Puffins, eagles, a dodo, imaginary avians and idiosyncratic interpretations of local birds; these will fly in to roost on Granville Island in May.
Port Moody potter Gillian McMillan has used her wheelthrowing skills to create a brightly-coloured flock of fanciful feathered friends. Most of these jugbirds are assembled from several sections thrown with red earthenware clay and then painted with coloured slips (liquid clay) and terra sigillata (really fine clay). They are finished with a durable, food-safe clear glaze. Some are created using stoneware clay with a salt glaze and these have an ancient look.
Jugbirds can be used for milk, gravy, custard, olive oil, water or wine – or their owners can perch them on a high shelf to supervise the kitchen.
