“Translations of Nature”
Lesley Richmond
Yvonne Wakabayashi
Lesley Richmond and Yvonne Wakabayashi are inspired by natural forms and textures, which they interpret as textile art works.
Yvonne’s inspiration comes from living close to the water’s edge. She is moved to recreate the delicate beauty and fragility of our living sea. Yvonne employs Japanese Gunma silk, woven in a small family mill in Gunma Prefecture because it connects her to her cultural heritage and reflects her appreciation for this precious silk that has been produced in the same way for centuries.
Lesley Richmond’s lace cloth series reflects her visits to lace museums in Europe. Because of her interest in the concept of deterioration, her pieces often resemble lace, a textile which is usually thought of as a prestigious fabric. Here she studies the growth structures of natural forms, which she constructs with heat-reactive pigments, referencing antique lace designs influenced by organic structures.
